Character Requirements
How character is assessed for NZ visas.
New Zealand's character requirements assess whether an applicant poses a risk to public safety or national security. The assessment considers the nature of any offending, the sentence imposed, and how long ago the offending occurred. Some convictions are absolute bars; others can be assessed with context and supporting evidence.
All applicants must disclose criminal convictions honestly. Failure to disclose — even minor convictions — is treated very seriously by INZ and can result in a ban on future applications. We advise on exactly what must be disclosed and how.
Full disclosure is always required
Never omit a conviction from an application, even if you believe it is minor or spent. Non-disclosure is treated more seriously than the underlying conviction itself.
